Over on BGG Jamey Stegmeier announced that Origin Story a game which uses trick-taking and tableau building will release at Essen (Limited quantities) and worldwide in Nov (But likely not here in US until 2026?). Starting off the hotness were two titles from Thunderworks Games

Fliptoons and Citizens of the Spark are two titles I saw being bought a ton and being played a bunch at tables around the con. Both lighter games and both very easy to play and learn.

Another big hotnesses I saw at the show was Cip Theory’s The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era with a new Crowdfunding coming before end of the year.

Reported to be in the new campaign–a reprint and two new areas, two new classes,some other things to add to game play,and an all in one storage solution.

I am always a sucker for Gloomhaven as we all know, At their booth they unveiled the new Mercenary packs they will be releasing

Hail, Irritable Enchanter; Anaphi, Fallen Lion; Satha, Mayor of Frosthaven; and Cassandra, Forgotten Diviner (From Forgotten Circles)

All are now available on their site for $20 each

Next up a game I played and liked and got some buzz was Koi by DV games. (`$45)

I mentioned both of these in the past but I got to see more about UVS games upcoming TMNT Set and the big thing which was all the rage but not for sale just yet was more unveiling of info and cards for Riftbound the LoL CCG

Speaking of CCG, Upper Deck was showing off their new CCG as well called Rush of Ikorr, which seems to be a familiar CCG system but incorporating transparencies kinda like games like Mystic Vale to change things up in the decks

CD Project RED unveiled The Witcher Legacy, listed on BGG as a 2027 release, which will be hitting Gamefound soon (more in the future once it’s up)

Catalyst Game Labs, partnering with Crunchyroll will put out My Hero Academia Miniatures Game (Coming soon to KS)

All miniatures will come preassembled and with a high quality pre-paint: a great premium collectible for easy, right-out-of-the-box plays.

Previously in Mystic Comics: The launch of The Human Torch in the pages of Marvel Comics/Marvel Mystery Comics in 1939 was one of publisher Martin Goodman’s characteristic “following the trends” moves, spurred on by the success of Superman, Batman, and company. The Torch was an immediate hit, but since Timely Comics’ in-house staff was basically just Goodman at the time, much of the material in the early issues of Daring Mystery Comics and Mystic Comics was sourced from comic packagers Funnies Inc. and Harry “A” Chesler. These early books are a virtual pantheon of superheroes, super-spies, two-fisted adventurers, and more, very few of whom were the hit that The Torch or his stable-mate, The Sub-Mariner ended up being.

With Mystic Comics #5, the editorship was handed over to a newly hired Joe Simon, but the search for the proverbial “Next Big Thing” continued. This issue features the debut of The Black Marvel (who later became the brains behind The Slingers), Blazing Skull (last seen in the pages of the New Invaders), The Terror (who I think fought She-Hulk as a geriatric), and Super-Slave (who was obviously never seen again). The Black Widow (who was one of The Twelve) makes an appearance as well, but it’s the first appearance of a Fred Guardineer creation that brings us together today.

This first page makes it clear that Moon-Man takes his inspiration from a certain Caped Crusader, living in his vast penthouse, driving a high-powered red roadster much like the early Batmobile, and haunting the rooftops by night. Guardineer is likely best known for creating Zatara, whose daughter Zatanna is still a big part of DC Comics history today. (His other creations included Tor, an ersatz Zatara, The Blue Tracer, and The Mouthpiece, all at Quality Comics.) As for ol’ Moony, he has a keen sense of justice, immediately taking to the streets when news breaks about innocent orphans being accidentally poisoned.

His skills as an investigator are immediately evident, as he quickly discovers the man behind the purchase of the bad beef. Having established the guilt of corrupt selectman Boss McGool, The Moon-Man shows up at the criminal’s home to shake him down, only to be run off by a pair of thugs.

Guardineer’s work always stands out for me in this era, as it seems at least half a decade ahead of its time in both the cohesive layouts and the detail in the work. As for the story, Moon-Man had success shaking down McGool’s secretary once, so he returns and cows her into signing a confession. But Boss McGool saw the writing on the wall and caught the first train out of the city to freedom!

But they say that the moon is a harsh mistress, and by extension, so is the Moon-Man.

Not gonna lie here, Moon-Man’s repeated targeting of a frightened woman is questionable, but for the second time, he pulls a gun and backs away from McGool’s thugs. The combination makes him come across a bit timid, though his leap from a moving train undermines that a bit.

I also find it a little hilarious that, once again, Moon-Man is just hanging out in his parlor in full costume, taking in the day’s news from the paper. Is he insane?

The idea that he was delusional was picked up when Moon-Man finally returned in 2011, in the pages of All Winners’ Squad: Band of Heroes, a series that posited that the short-lived heroes of Marvel/Timely’s Golden Age disappeared because they were drafted into military service as part of a secret battalion during WWII. That story remains unfinished, but Moon-Man’s debut in Mystic Comics #5 stands as a well-crafted eight-pager, with above-average art for the era and 3 out of 5 stars overall. There are dozens of these side characters in the comics of the late ’30s/early ’40s, and it’s always fun for me to look at these one-shots, coulda-beens, and also-rans and wonder… Could Moon-Man have been bigger than Bat-Man?

Restoration Games will release the next big(er) box of Unmatched this month, Unmatched: Battle of Legends Vol. 3 will feature Blackbeard, the Chupacabra, Loki, and Pandora July ‘25 ($45)

Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) will release a box expansion for Marvel Champions, Civil War with heroes battling heroes and adds Tigra and Hulkling Sept’25 (~$45-50).

FFG will also release The Trickster Takeover Scenario Pack Aug ‘25 ($22)

2 new Star Trek Captain’s chair expansions will be coming Dec 25 one stand alone and one smaller Expansion

Gen Con and Essen releases have been announced by CGE

SETI: Space Agencies is an expansion for SETI (my game of the year 2024) and will add player powers, new aliens to discover, “Prelude” type cards and a few more additions. (Essen Release but as always I am hoping some will be at Gen Con)

Galaxy Trucker: Do What!? An expansion for Galaxy Trucker adds two new modules to be released at Gen Con ($25-30)

And their 3rd announced release is a new title Called Wispwood which has very little information outside of tile drafting/laying and releasing at Essen

Dire Wolf will release a new Bag building train game by Paul Dennon called Lightning Train to be released at Gen Con.

Cryptozoic will release Teen Titans Go! Deck-Building Game ($35) and DC Deck-Building Game: Arkham Asylum ($55) , both stand alone games to be released in Aug ’25

Restoration Games will release Unmatched Adventures: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into retail in July ($80)

After being crowdfunded last year Play to Z is releasing their social deduction game 23 Knives in April ‘25 ($40)
